Using bulk metallic glass, scientists have developed 3D printing methods

According to an article in Tomorrow Science on September 15, 2018, 3D printing is an important direction for the future development of the industry, however use of metal is a major problem to be overcome.

Recently, Prof. Jan Schroers of Yale University's Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and his colleagues developed bulk metallic glass.

The researchers used materials such as zirconium, titanium, copper, nickel and niobium to soften and extrude metal glass under high temperature and pressure. Bulk metallic glass has a low liquefaction temperature, and is strong and corrosion-resistant. With these characteristics, metal printing with bulk metallic glass from various alloys will produce stronger products and be made more easily in the future.
